Fall Fruits

Which Fruits are In-Season in the Fall?

Ah, the cornucopia… It’s the autumn symbol of plenty and nourishment. You know what it is. It’s that horn-shaped basket of fall fruits, flowers, nuts, and seasonal produce. The produce is reaped from a bountiful harvest.

The fall fruits that pour out from the cornucopia are so beautiful. Usually, you’ll see apples, figs, pears, and persimmons. But are there other fall fruits? Which fall fruits in season are the best to eat if you’re trying to live your healthiest life?

Fall Fruits in Season

Now, back in the day, you could really only find a fruit if it was that particular fruit’s season. Before refrigeration, summer was the only season that produced tons of fruit.

This wasn’t such a bad thing. The human body was built to feast in the summer months and respond to scarcity in the winter months. But now, you can walk into the produce section of your local market and find whatever you want, whenever you want it.

But your body was actually built to use the fat it stores in winter. The glucose stored in your muscles and liver from summer and fall fruits would become your fuel. That is, until you were lucky enough to come across more food.

The Fall Fruits in Season ‘Yes’ List

So, what are nature’s fall fruits in season? There are plenty. The list below shows you which fall fruits in season fit the bill when it comes to The Plant Paradox and The Longevity Paradox. Check them out:

Gundry’s Fall Fruits in Season ‘Yes’ List

  • Apples
  • Avocados
  • Green Bananas
  • Figs (flower)
  • Lemons
  • Limes
  • Crispy (Green) Pears
  • Persimmon

Now, it is still recommended that you enjoy these fall fruits in season in moderation. But there are some great health benefits to enjoying the fruits in season listed above. Let’s discuss just a few of them.

All-season Favorite: The Avocado

Believe it or not, everybody’s favorite guacamole ingredient is one of the fall’s best fruits in season. Did you know the flesh of the avocado contains more prebiotic fiber than an artichoke? It’s true. Also, the avocado is full of vitamin C, vitamin E, potassium, and folate. And it’s sugar content is super low.1

Furthermore, avocados are filled with healthy monounsaturated fat. It’s the same kind of healthy fat you find in olive oil – oleic acid. Oleic acid can help your body resist oxidative damage.2

The Persimmon (is it actually one of the fall fruits?)

Many believe the persimmon is just a fruit, but it happens to be a resistant starch too. Resistant starches are great, in moderation. This is because they behave a bit differently in your gut than other carbs (eg: corn, rice, or wheat, or fruit).

You see, once glucose is digested it is often stored as fat. But resistant starches can pass through your small intestine and remain (mostly) intact. That means they don’t get digested.

Therefore, they don’t usually raise your blood sugar or insulin levels.3

And since they don’t spike your blood sugar, they keep you feeling fuller longer than most other starches.

Fall Fruits in Season

Again, the fall harvest is a beautiful one. No wonder so many people celebrate the fall by cooking amazing meals with fresh produce.

This fall, look for avocados, green bananas, and persimmons to dress your table for every meal.
